Virginia's Water Quality: Issues and Initiatives Virginia has been a partner in the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay since signing the first Chesapeake Bay Agreement in 1983. Our involvement has continued with the most recent Chesapeake 2000 Agreement, known as "C2K." Central to our Chesapeake Bay initiatives have been efforts to reduce excess quantities of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) and sediments (soil and other materials that wash off the land or erode from shorelines into the waters of the bay and its tributaries). Beginning in 1992, Virginia began developing strategies for nutrient and sediment reductions in each of the bay's major tributary basins: the Shenandoah/Potomac, Rappahannock, York, James, and collectively, the creeks and rivers of the Eastern Shore. The website dealing with Virginia Water Quality has recently been moved and updated. At this link you'll find information on the Virginia Water Quality Improvement Fund and on Statewide Tributary Strategies.
